Birds
in Hand: Ornithological Prints in Phelps Science
Center
Earlier this year, Claire Phillips, widow of John
Phillips ’30, made a gift to Exeter of a
number of ornithological prints of British and
American species by a range of artists, including
Audubon. The works began their life in the Lamont
Gallery in the show From Audubon to Wetzel,
which drew summer school students in art and biology
classes, among others. As part of a recent effort
to populate Exeter’s public buildings with
more art, a number of the prints were recently
hung in locations in Phelps Science Center, including
the Biology wing. Not only are the prints a useful
resource for biology classes, says Lamont Gallery
Director Karen Burgess Smith, but they also help
students see a connection between science and art.
