Nathaniel G. Butler '64 to receive the
2005 Founder's Day Award

Nathaniel G. Butler '64 will receive the 2005 Founder's Day Award in Assembly on May 20. A resident of Boston, MA, Butler was a four-year student at Exeter before matriculating at Harvard, where he earned a bachelor's degree in government. He spent three years in the Navy, serving 16 months in Vietnam, before earning an MBA from Harvard in 1975 and a MSW from the Simmons School of Social Work in 1982. His career has been in the field of health care management.

Butler has held many volunteer positions for Exeter over the past 30 years. He was a class agent from 1977 to 1998 and served concurrently as class president from 1984 to 1989. He served on the class leadership advisory committee and as a director of the General Alumni/ae Association from 1988 to 1994, and has served on class reunion committees for the past four reunion cycles. He has also been a member of the 1781 committee and is active in the Exeter Association of New England.

In 1985, following the death of his father, Jonathan G. Butler ' 35, Nathaniel Butler established the Butler Scholarship Fund in his and his father's names. He has made a point of visiting the recipients on campus at least once each year.

In 1994, Butler received the President's Award for service to Exeter in recognition of his work as a liaison between the Academy and its gay and lesbian alumni/ae, work he continued for another seven years after receiving the award. He continues to participate in Academy programs on gay and lesbian issues.

The Founder's Day Award is given annually to an alumnus, alumna, faculty emeritus or emerita, retired staff member, parent or friend who has demonstrated exceptional and sustained service to the Academy over time.
