Nathaniel G. Butler '64 to receive
the
2005 Founder's Day Award
Nathaniel G. Butler '64 will receive
the 2005 Founder's Day Award in Assembly on May 20.
A resident of Boston, MA, Butler was a four-year student
at Exeter before matriculating at Harvard, where he
earned a bachelor's degree in government. He spent three
years in the Navy, serving 16 months in Vietnam, before
earning an MBA from Harvard in 1975 and a MSW from the
Simmons School of Social Work in 1982. His career has
been in the field of health care management.
Butler has held many volunteer positions for Exeter
over the past 30 years. He was a class agent from 1977
to 1998 and served concurrently as class president from
1984 to 1989. He served on the class leadership advisory
committee and as a director of the General Alumni/ae
Association from 1988 to 1994, and has served on class
reunion committees for the past four reunion cycles.
He has also been a member of the 1781 committee and
is active in the Exeter Association of New England.
In 1985, following the death of his father, Jonathan
G. Butler ' 35, Nathaniel Butler established the Butler
Scholarship Fund in his and his father's names. He has
made a point of visiting the recipients on campus at
least once each year.
In 1994, Butler received the President's Award for
service to Exeter in recognition of his work as a liaison
between the Academy and its gay and lesbian alumni/ae,
work he continued for another seven years after receiving
the award. He continues to participate in Academy programs
on gay and lesbian issues.
The Founder's Day Award is given annually to an alumnus,
alumna, faculty emeritus or emerita, retired staff member,
parent or friend who has demonstrated exceptional and
sustained service to the Academy over time.
