“Ten years ago,” says Dr. Ming Chiou of Middletown, New York, “I made a pact with myself that when I reached age 65, I would do something special for the Academy in honor of the fine teachers there.” Now Dr. Chiou, the father of three Exeter alumnae, has done just that. On May 9, 2003, he forwarded one of his first United States Treasury checks to Exeter, along with the following note to Principal Ty Tingley:
“Dear Principal Tingley:
I have a special gift for Exeter since the Academy played such an important role in the lives of my three daughters (Angela Portia ’85, Pauline ’88, Victoria ’90).
When I started to plan for my retirement, I decided that I would donate one of my first Social Security checks to Phillips Exeter Academy. Enclosed is the actual check. Please accept this as a thank you to the faculty who helped shape the minds of my children.
Best wishes to the future!
Sincerely,
Ming C. Chiou, M.D.”
