Chuck Harris '69 is enjoying an active retirement—very active, as a matter of fact, thanks to his high school alma mater. The former Goldman Sachs investment banker (he left Goldman in December 2002) has assumed a key role in the forthcoming comprehensive campaign, as its chair. An Exeter trustee since 1999, Chuck has been actively engaged in the Academy Master Plan process almost since its inception, first serving as an Academy Life Task Force member and later hosting small discussion groups at his home in Connecticut. As campaign chair, Chuck will serve as the campaign's chief executive officer in consultation with Principal Tingley. He will likewise work closely with Campaign Director Ted Probert and the Academy's major gifts team to organize a campaign steering committee and to implement the strategic steps necessary to ensure the Academy is prepared to embark on this significant initiative.

Of his trustee and early campaign involvement, Chuck says, "There's nothing I've enjoyed more than the work I've done on behalf of Exeter in the last four or five years. The experience I had as a student at the Academy is in many ways the same as the one I'm having now; the quality of thinking, the pace of activity and the desire for constant improvement are as powerful, and inspiring, as ever."

Educational causes are close to Chuck's heart, and he brings a wealth of experience in this arena to his latest Exeter role. He serves as a director of the Scholastic Corporation and of Scholastic's Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, Inc.; he has also served on the board of trustees of New Canaan Country School and continues to be involved with College Summit, an organization that facilitates college admissions for low-income students with average marks, and with Teach for America.

Harris is clearly excited by the campaign and by what its initiatives, when fully realized, will do for Exeter. "I feel very strongly about the Academy's mission to provide a challenging education," he says. "And I'm thankful to be part of a team that's working to ensure its future."
