The
Phelps Science Center Dedication was an important
moment in the history of Phillips Exeter Academy—an
opportunity for members of the Exeter family to
come together to celebrate science in general
and science at Exeter in particular. Science instructors
are excited to be able to implement fully their
plan for Harkness science teaching, a process
that began a number of years ago but that has
come to fruition thanks to the planning and generosity
of so many alumni/ae, parents and friends of the
Academy.
The
two-day program of events began Friday, October
26, 2001, with a reception and dinner in the new
Center. To honor the foresight and generosity
of Elizabeth and Stanford N. Phelps ’52 and as
a way of expressing the Exeter community’s gratitude
for their important contributions, science department
chair Chris Matlack and Principal Tingley presented
the couple with an antique scale from the original
Thompson Science Building.
On
Saturday, October 27, 2001, alumni/ae, parents,
faculty, staff and students (approximately 1,000
in all) squeezed in under a huge tent that had
been erected on the Academy Building Lawn to hear
about the design of the new Phelps Science Center
and how it will impact students now and in the
future. After the speeches, guests walked to the
Phelps Science Center to witness the official
ribbon cutting and to participate in workshops
and demonstrations given by the Exeter science
faculty.
